Weekend update,,,,Pick of the Week is this Saturday!

My Pick of the Week is this Saturday, February 5th. The Rumor Mill presents the opening art reception of Watercolors; An Exhibition, featuring the work of Sherwood Brown. There will also be live entertainment with Greg Cruz and The Venice Street Legends. Art and Music, refreshments and treats….what more can you ask for? Friday February 4th

It’s First Friday’s on Abbot Kinney once again. In case you have never been, the festivities start around 6:30 pm. Stores stay open till around 9:00 pm.….With the recent arrival of food trucks upon the boulevard, some stores have decided to close early. However, here is a list of some shops that have confirmed with me that they will indeed be open and participating in the event. So start with these, and I’m sure you will stumble on more.

G2 Gallery, 1503 Abbot Kinney will be hosting a wonderful opening with artist Rosa Romero from 6:30–9:00 pm. Live music by Eric Kufs; Snacks and refreshments. http://www.theg2gallery.com/

Right next door, you have to stop into Zingara Trading 1507 Abbot Kinney for their famous S'mores…Yum! They have one of-a-kind clothing and accessories….simply gorgeous and are also having a Winter Clearance Sale - 20-75% off select merchandise. 310 392-6424;  http://www.zingaratrading.com/.

And across the street at one of my favorite furniture stores, Tumbleweed and Dandelion 1502 Abbot Kinney Blvd will be open with snacks and a Furniture sale too!  310-450-4310.

Nitespa 1301 Abbot Kinney will be open for First Fridays and offer all kinds of little treats and specials during the evening. They always create a fun festive vibe. Enjoy rosemary water, organic teas and wine. There will also be art and jewelry for sale. Open till 10:00 pm. The entrance is on Santa Clara. 310.396.5122; www.nitespa.com.



Just a hop, skip and a jump from Abbot Kinney is The Electric Lodge. You may want to check out their first show of their Winter/Spring 2011 season, Awake in a World that Encourages Sleep. This contemporary and compelling one-act play is a work in progress by Raymond J. Barry a veteran actor/playwright and founding member of New York's legendary Open Theater.

The 3-person piece is a provocative tale of Love, Politics and Economic Hit Men in a world of Endless War and corporate domination. The show will be performed by Tacey Adams, Raymond J. Barry, and Joseph Culp.

This is the last weekend. It plays Friday and Saturday 8:00pm, and Sundays at 7:00pm. The run ends Feb 6th. It is produced by the Electric Lodge.

One more option, If you are craving art on a Friday night and can’t handle the sometimes overwhelming mob scene on Abbot Kinney, or just want to keep the party going, take a trip to Los Feliz and check out La Luz de Jesus Gallery. This edgy gallery creates quite the scene. This one features works by Myron Conan Dyal and Jennifer Logan. The gallery is located at 4633 Hollywood Blvd near Vermont. Saturday, February 5th


Lets start with my PICK OF THE WEEK    Yeah…..music and Art…..my fave!

Come to the opening reception of Sherwood Brown’s latest exhibit Watercolors; An Exhibition at the Rumor Mill. Inspired by his road trips with his family, Brown finds the beauty of the California landscape as the perfect subject for his paintings. There will be live entertainment by Greg Cruz and The Venice Street Legends. These guys rock out with classic acoustic country. Complimentary food and drink will be served as well. The opening starts at 7:30 pm and lasts till 10:00 pm.

Another great one,…and you may want to start off your Saturday out on the town at this wonderful event at Beyond Baroque called Poetry of Venice Photography produced and hosted by Gerry Fialka. This is a two part event. The earlier portion starts at 2:00 pm where Fialka hosts a panel discussion of award winning photographers. This part lasts till 4:00 pm and there is a suggested donation of $7.00, however NO ONE will be turned away.

Then let your Saturday night continue, while on the way to my Pick of the Week, stop off at The Happening Gallery. Be sure to grab your honey, or look for a new one there, as Saturday will be the pre-valentine reception of “For the Love of Art”. Romantic Refreshments will be served…oooh la la, sounds sexy! The event runs from 6:00 pm till 9:00 pm and the address is 4047 Lincoln Blvd. at Washington Blvd in Marina Del Rey. 310 305-ARTS; http://www.thehappeninggallery.com/.


 
If you want to continue the party….head over to Culver City, you still have time to hit Thinkspace for an opening reception featuring Anthony Clarkson and Kelly Vivanco. Then end your evening on La Brea Ave at the very popular gallery, The Merry Karnowsky, which lasts till 11:00 pm. (start time is 8:00pm). There’s always Pinks Hot Dogs, down the street when the munchies kick in.

Sunday February 6th

For all you non Superbowl people, Stagger out to G2 Gallery at 2:00 pm for a book reading with Stacey O’Brien, author of New York Times bestseller Wesley the Owl. There will also be a live barn owl from South Bay Wildlife Rehab will be here to meet the public. How Cool!
